January has been a slow month, workwise. But I have enjoyed trying some new techniques and just playing in general.

This is another layered collage that is stitched and then sections are cut away. I haven't quilted yet. In fact, haven't figured out how to finish yet.

I was just itching to play with these pretty wools, so I started this from one of Need'l Love books.

I really needed to organize my fusibles, stabilizers, freezer paper, etc. I got some clear plastic at Joann's, Cut it in half, sewed some bias tape on the edges and put the two pieces together and stitched about every 4 1/2". Then I found one of those old trouser hangers and slipped it over the rod and hung it up. This project is finished!

This top is ready for quilting and is hanging in the "what was I thinking" section. Community quilt donation, probably.

I received a gift card for Quilted Threads, so I bought enough of these new "Stitch in Color" by Malka Dubrawsky to make a queen size quilt. It should go pretty fast, it is definitely all about the fabric.

I finally dug into my Shiva paintsticks and started stenciling some fabric for a small wall quilt. Thankfully, the paintsticks still work, I guess they will last a very long time.

Let's see what I finish in February!

I put this little piece on a purple background, quilted the blocks down with more circles and straight lines at the edges, and used silk thread to make french knots around the blocks. Then I lightly rubbed a bronze stamp pad across the top, then lightly dusted copper Pearl-ex powder all over.

I will cut it down to about 10" square and put a facing on the back.

Certainly there is lots of room for improvement in technique, but I felt absolute joy working on this little quilt. I am inspired and will have to find some dedicated studio time after the holiday.

Play time today! Well for a little while, anyway. Today I finally hooked up a dvd player to my little TV in the studio and watched Beryl Taylor's video from Quilting Arts TV. Then I got out a box of scraps and tried this little "reverse applique" method for a small (10 x 10) art quilt. It was fun to throw together fabric, it almost didn't matter what I used, and made some blocks. It hasn't been quilted down yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Here is the strip set from the previous post. I used the circle template set from QuiltEscapes for cutting them. I am working on the base of the quilt, ran out of strata right away and spent the rest of the day making another one. There will be fun things added to the circles when the base is done: arcs, crosscutting, paper pieced spikes and fused applique. This two day workshop with Louisa Smith was a lot of fun, I wish there had been more time.

Here is one of the strip sets and main fabric that I will be playing with at The Gathering next weekend. My friend and I are taking a two day workshop with Louisa Smith. It took four full days this summer to pick the fabrics (all from my stash), cut the 1 1/2" strips, and sew them into one big strata. I cut four strips from each fabric, so this weekend I will try to sew either one more big strata or a few smaller ones. Got to be prepared!

I cut this quilt last week and spent the weekend sewing up at Sunapee. I managed to get the top done, wasted no time quilting and finishing, and made some pillows from the leftovers. I bought the border fabric from Quilted Threads at a sale a few weeks ago. The rest of the fabrics came from my stash.

I have finally organized most of my stash and it is pretty easy to see what I have. It is downright inspiring! It took years to get my studio cleared of exercise equipment and put up storage, but it's done. I took photos of the mess, both in the house and studio. Since then we have made a few improvements and it is a good reminder of how far we have come, even when it seems overwhelming. This old house is a constant project, and occasionally we have a burst of renovations, then we take a break, so it is never caught up. But we are never bored!

Here is a sampling of what I hope will become a queen size quilt someday. I started this in a workshop at Quilted Threads yesterday. Yes, I could have figured this out on my own, sewn it in my nice, big, bright studio. But uninterrupted sewing time? And the tips that Mary gave us all will make this quilt go together very easily, I think.

Here are all of the Dancing Batik blocks done and on the wall. The row on the right is pinned on the wall and that lump is the thermostat. Ran out of room. I like this setting instead of the one in the pattern, there are more blocks to play with. I am not sure if the colors are in their final place, so any input from an objective eye will be welcome. Now on to the spiky border. I want to find a way to incorporate a small inner border to make it just a little bigger to fit the bed. This will take a lot of quilting, too.

Here's another wall quilt, finally finished! I used orange thread and did a spiral pattern allover. I guess I'm in an orange mood, I think it's really a summer mood. What a long winter! I feel like a prisoner in my house, but I admit I'm happy that I don't have to drive to get to work.

Here is my most recent diversion. I took a workshop with Lizz Van Saun of Kast Hill Studio in Hopkinton, NH. The workshop was held at Wild Orchid Guest Farm in Deerfield. I can honestly say it was a good day, the people, place and food were fabulous. Lizz is very talented, and although I made lots of mistakes (and learned a lot), I am inspired to try another mosaic project. Fabric collage is definitely easier!

Just another snow day.

Got the chickens with the hearts done at Quilted Threads, next is to work on the chickens with the stars. The pattern is Barn Chicks by the Buggy Barn. My friend Sue kept saying she had "chicken envy" so I think she has already named this one for me.

This one is a simple wall hanging still on the design wall. I just needed to make something with simple piecing. So much paper piecing and wonky piecing, using rulers and quarter inch seams for this one was soothing.

Went to Quilted Threads and got some of these Moda wovens. I love the way the quilting looks on them, so whatever I make with these will be to feature quilting. I also got a back for the Dr. Seuss quilt and signed up for the Buggy Barn class.

Here are 20 units for the Dancing Batiks quilt I started in Montana October 2009. I decided to make a queen size quilt, ordered the extra papers from Quiltworx, had the fabric cut and bagged, and am finally getting back to it. I should probably get back to work, but I needed time off to recharge, and I'm really having fun. (Except for being sick this past week!)

Threw together a YBR with the new Dr. Seuss fabric for the youngest grandson. I need a back and then I can quilt it right away. His Mom tells me he is into the Dr. Seuss books now, so he will recognize the characters. He's in a big boy bed and needs a new quilt.

I finished the pieced border yesterday and attached both borders today. The book has a pieced outside border, but after putting one pieced border on, it needed (I needed) a solid piece of fabric on the outside of the quilt before I quilt it. I really think it's coming out nice and I hope the group likes what I've done with their blocks.

I have the blocks from the cover quilt of the book Clever Quarters Too on the design wall. They are blocks done by a group and I will work on the border blocks now so it can be quilted. I hope to get this one finished in January.

I joined a strip club of the month at Fort Worth Fabric Studio. Not that I need anymore fabric, let alone strips. But I figure I can get all the newest batiks without taking up space in my studio. I like this pattern, I think it will look nice in the Zinfandel Bali pop.

This week we had to have one of the old maples in the front yard cut. Last week a really big branch broke during a windy night and it was hung up on another branch right over the roof. The reason there is a 12 foot stump is because it is full of concrete. Apparently, that is how they used to "save" a split tree.

This little chunk that came out of the maple is a wood duck nest. Last spring (2009) I just happened to catch a duck flopping out of this tree. When I looked down on the ground, I saw 7 or 8 little gray ducklings waiting for mama. What a sight! So we saw the mama wood duck back in the tree this past spring, but missed the evacuation of the ducklings. When she, or they, return next spring, we are hoping they will find one of the other two maples just as accommodating for a nest.

Finished up the pillow I started last spring. I put some of the leftover orange from the tablerunners on the back.

I love this solid fabric. It is really beautiful, the color is much more vibrant than shown here. It shows up the quilting perfectly. I will have to go to Quilted Threads get more, some different colors.

Today was a good day to finish a few projects that have been piling on my cutting table. This is a tablerunner made from leftover strips. It will actually live on a hutch for now.

This is the tablerunner I started in October at the annual Sunapee gathering for sewing friends. I saw the pattern in the newest issue of Stitch and just couldn't resist! Never that easy though...

Here's the issue I found the directions in.

Here is the original photo and the pattern sheet. Now, my tablerunner is quilt a bit larger than it should be because I had to add 3 wedges to each arc to make it square at the bottom. The wedge template on the pattern page was wrong, so if you make a template, use the wedges from the curved arch to make it, not the separate one they have. It's not shown in this picture, but it's on the pattern sheet. You can see the two different templates I made, the one on the left is the one on the pattern sheet and the one on the right would have made the arcs correctly. Just remember to add seam allowances..

Having explained the error (hopefully the fix), must add that I really love the way mine came out, and I'm glad it's bigger.

I had fun making this little wall quilt for a yankee swap. I changed the pattern a little, and made the blackbirds into cardinals. There are clear crystals on the tree and orange ones for the eyes.

Over the past year, we've acquired a new couch and rug for the living room. I bought some paint at Sherwin Williams 30% off sale last weekend, a lovely grayed down lilac mauvey shade. I need something new to hang on the wall, so I took a weekend off to put this top together. It's a Sew Be It pattern. There's no telling when it will get quilted, or when the walls will be painted, but there is a plan.

Zoe had knee surgery yesterday for the other ACL, so she will be in the crate for her rehab for the next 4-5 months. If the room doesn't get painted in the next week, it will be awhile.

These guys were oblivious to us when we drove the jeep up the beach in Corolla, NC. It's off road all the way up to catch a glimpse of the wild ponies that have lived there for 400+ years. We never got to see the ponies, but it was a fun ride.

These quilts were made by quilters at the fall 2009 retreat with Judy Niemeyer for Karen and Kim. Thanks to these ladies, many quilters were able to attend retreats in beautiful Montana for three years. The labels were embroidered by one of the retreat attendees. The pattern is "Waterfall" by Judy, and she donated the foundations as well as a demo on sewing the blocks.

I'm determined to spend more time in 2010 finishing some UFO's, but I just couldn't resist adding one more to the pile after Christmas. I have also decided that I will make quilts for all my siblings and their kids. So some of my UFO's will have homes right away. This one will be for a sister. It is in batiks and the blocks are 8", so I will need about 100 blocks and a small border. There will likely be enough blocks left over for a lap quilt in this design. I hope.

Finally, I have once again picked up the sweater I've been working on for the past two years. It takes awhile, I only work on it for a few months after Christmas. This is a shot of the back, the front is done, and I have finally started the sleeves. I hope to get it done this winter. It is the Willow Tunic from Jamiesons Shetland Knitting book 2. The yarn is Berrocco Ultra Alpaca that I got a few years ago on my annual trek to Webs. Last year, actually in January 2009, I got enough yarn for two sweaters, a vest, two pairs of socks, a hat and mitten set, and two scarves. I haven't started any of these yet, and January 2010 is just about here. Can I justify more yarn? Hell, yes!

This is the quilt I worked on this last trip to Kalispell for a Judy Niemeyer retreat. It is her paper piecing pattern called Dancing Batiks, set a little differently. I will be making a bed size and work on it after Christmas. It was pulled together and cut about 2 years ago, and it is not as "warm" as I thought, so I will try to add some colors to balance out the many "cool" fabrics.

So glad I've finished working for the holiday! This is the first year since I started longarm quilting in 2001 that I've had more than 2 days off to get ready for Christmas. Now to clean, move furniture, decorate and shop, cook, wrap, and in my spare time I hope to hem the curtains I bought last year and hang them up!

I made this kindling box for the porch. Roger installed a cute little wood stove out there and this is perfect for it. It took only one day to paint the designs on it in a workshop at the Quilted Acorn in W. Newbury, MA. Of course Cynthia makes it very simple to do.

The first stop this week was the Buggy Barn for Brenda and I. It is a tiny little carriage house, but when we walked in, we had to just stand there to look at all the quilts on every inch of wall and ceiling. Great fun!

This is the completed Dragon Star pattern. It won a first place and a Viewer's Choice at the Cocheco show this past weekend.
This is the last quilt I was working on. It won a red ribbon and a Judges Choice. I also showed the small quilt "Green River" and it got a blue ribbon.

Alrighty, now we're cookin! Got this ready to put together yesterday. Blocks are done, and paper is off! I wasn't sure about the green in the small border, but lime was too bright and olivey green faded away. I like this the best.

Been working on this Judy Niemeyer paper pieced quilt this weekend. It's hot out, and I can't go anywhere for awhile. Have to take care of the dog, she's confined for 3 months after knee surgery. And the kitten is crazy. And the other dog hurt her hip. So I have been happily stealing some hours in my air conditioned studio. I have to go take care of everybody right now, I really don't want to stop. I think I will keep going on this tomorrow, can't wait to get this on the machine.

Oh Boy, I came home from guild tonight and look who I met! Kenn , my stepson, and his brother-in-law, James, brought him over for us to adopt. Kenn's wife and son had brought us Little "Perley" Big Britches 6 years ago, and they just found out he died. So they brought this little guy over to try and cheer me up. He's cute and the others, (Domino, Molly and Zoe) seem to like him okay. We haven't named him yet, we'll have to see what fits. Roger has been calling him Stinky, but I don't want that to stick!

Here's another one I started at Asilomar in the "Series" workshop. I did some quilting on it (not shown yet) and have been trying to quilt the circles with some metallic thread that keeps bunching up on the back. I will have to figure this out since I really like the thread. I don't love this quilt as much as the previous one, but maybe if I keep at it, I'll be able to bond with it.

I finished this one from the Empty Spools seminar with Jeanette DeNicolis Meyer. I took the workshop "Working In A Series" hoping to gain some confidence in my own work. I don't think I started out that way, but once I got there....So I had lots of advice, and "you should..." and it was all good, but I had to struggle to stay on track and do my own thing, good or bad. So I am very proud of this one. I used all my own hand dyed fabric and I like it very much. It just evolved, and when I did the quilting last night I was really into it and listening to CCR, hence the name "Green River." I am taking it to Portsmouth Fabric today to hopefully be included in the 30th anniversary celebration display on the Brick Wall Gallery. Wish me luck!

Finished this wall hanging this weekend. Now I'll have to paint the dining room and kitchen to really make things pop! We've had the paint for 2 years and painted one wall right before Christmas. It really looks great and now we need to finish! I have so many UFO's that it is good to finish something. (Wish there were about 60 hours in a day.) I got a bag o' buttons at Quilted Threads in Henniker and stacked some lime green and purple ones in the flowers. Fun.

Thelma, the mother turkey that roams our field every day, brought her chicks to the feeder at the window the other morning. They are so cute! We've also had a fox at the feeder several times, so I hope they make it.

I am devastated by Perley's death yesterday. He was sitting in my lap, we were watching the birds, having coffee. I went downstairs an hour later and he was dead on the floor. Only 6 years old! He went to work with me every day, sat in the window. If I put the music on, he wouldn't stop begging until I picked him up and we had a few dances. Then he'd settle in for the day, all content. If I muttered to myself, he'd answer me. I just don't know what happened to him. It could have been a stroke. But I am afraid that he may have been knocked about and trampled by the dogs he loved and trusted so much. When they heard someone at the door and jumped up and ran to see, he may have gotten caught up. It's hard for me to deal with them today, I just don't know. Maybe tomorrow. It's quiet in the studio today.

The orioles are back and they have tidied up last season's nest. I wonder if these are the parents from last year or the babies? We have a phoebe nest in the new garden shed, which is now being called "the big birdhouse." Also, the grosbeaks (evening and rose-breasted), and cardinals and several varieties of woodpeckers.

This is a very small quilt top that I put together during a workshop at Asilomar in February. The class, Working in a Series, with Jeanette DeNicolis Meyer was fantastic! I made three additional small quilts while there, yet to be quilted. This one was part of the exercise done the first day, and I put borders on later at home. Sort of a what if... Maybe the quilting will help. I feel like I'm looking at some sort of weird hungry ginkgo fish in a tank. Or on TV.

Last weekend we went to the farm in Maine for Dad and Aunt Marilyn's 75th birthday celebration. What a great day, to see my Dad and his bride, Vira, and my brother and sister in law, Dave and Pat. Lots and lots of cousins and their kids. It was amazing to see them all grown up, some with kids of their own! (Can't dwell on how old we have gotten!) The hula hoop competition was for kids of all ages! When Jimmy played a rousing Happy Birthday on his harmonica, we all laughed and cried, and it was a time to remember how cherished every generation is.

Summer is almost gone and the grandkids will be back to school tomorrow. Nathan and Andrea came over in the morning for a bag of fabric scraps. They made a very nice tablerunner and each of them sewed and stuffed a pincushion. Both of them returned in the afternoon bearing these lovely gifts. It is a joy to have creative grandbabies!
